why does it takes 3 copies of 1/6 to show the same amount as 1copy of 1 / 2

Because multiplying 3 * 1/6 gives us 3/6 which simplifies to 1/2.

you have to make the denominators equal, so 3 x 1/6 = 3/6 = 1/2 
and 1/2 already equals itself
